The predominant feature of this Austrian safe is the Rampant Bear which adorns the crown. A huge and threatening beast especially when standing, he is the safe´s protector, guarding the door against intruders. This mighty and noble animal has a portentous history: used as a totem symbol by Native Americans along with the wolf and the eagle, he is also the national symbol of Russia. Most crown tops found on safes have floral or emblematic themes. Animal crowns are usually lions or eagles, so The Bear is exceptional, a rarity indeed, and we are proud to have this particular treasure in our collection. The safe´s original home was on Beach Road, Singapore, the busy waterfront thoroughfare where international trading took place in the 19th Century. The brass label at the top reads ´Chan Seng - Singapore´ the name of the importers, who brought it over from Austria around 1880. Once in place, it would have belonged to a wealthy merchant and who knows what riches were once concealed within? Opium, gold bars, firearms, emeralds? The safe has two separate locks and a solid brass handle beneath which is a scroll which reads: ´Guaranteed Fireproof. Made in Austria´. The hand painted trompe-l´oeil panelling emulates the grain of mahogany, rosewood and amboyna. >> Download Full Brochure |
